When Is the Right Time to Shop for Your Wedding Dress?

One of the most common questions we hear is, "When should I shop for my wedding dress?"

The answer is simple - if you have the time, use it!

At a traditional bridal boutique that sells made-to-order gowns, brides are often encouraged to shop about a year before their wedding. This timeline allows enough time for the gown to be ordered from the designer, manufactured, shipped, and altered before the big day.

As an off-the-rack bridal boutique, we can offer much shorter timelines since our gowns are already in stock and ready to take home. If your wedding is coming up quickly, we'll do everything we can to help you find a beautiful gown. However, shopping earlier still gives you more flexibility and options.

Our inventory is constantly changing as new gowns arrive and others find their weddings. If you begin shopping well in advance, you have the advantage of time. For example, if we don't currently have the style you're looking for or the perfect size to try on, you can book another appointment a few months later when our inventory has been refreshed. New gowns arrive regularly, and that extra time can make a big difference in finding the dress that's just right for you.

That being said, come to your first appointment ready to say YES because you never know what might happen! So many brides find their dream dress when they least expect it, and often it's nothing like what they originally envisioned. Brides who keep an open mind and trust the process are often the ones who find their perfect gown sooner than they imagined!

Many brides (and their guests!) don't want the excitement of wedding dress shopping to end and we completely understand. It's such a special experience that it can be tempting to keep looking, even after you've found a gown you love. However, don't let FOMO get in the way of having your moment. When you've found a dress that makes you feel beautiful, confident, and excited to walk down the aisle, it's okay to say YES, even if it’s “early”!

Plus, there's nothing quite like crossing one of the biggest items off your wedding to-do list!

It's also important to remember that alterations take time. While rush alterations can sometimes be an option, most seamstresses prefer to have approximately 6–8 weeks for alterations. During busy wedding seasons or if customizations are required, they may need even more time. We strongly encourage brides to contact their seamstress months before their first alteration appointment to secure a spot on the calendar. Planning ahead helps ensure you have plenty of time for fittings and adjustments without feeling rushed.

While finding your dream dress on a shorter timeline is certainly possible, and one of the biggest advantages of shopping off the rack is flexibility, having extra time on your side can make the experience even more enjoyable.

Giving yourself plenty of time means you won't have to limit your options based on availability or deadlines. You'll get to find the perfect dress while still enjoying the journey.
